Stay safe on video conference calls

Essential steps to secure your video conference calls

Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, video conferencing has become our lifeline to the world. We connect there for department meetings, it’s a forum for school classes and it’s a link to our workout hui.

During the week of March 14-21, video conferencing apps saw a record 62 million downloads (as reported by App Annie, a global provider of mobile market data). The rapid increase in users has also caught the attention of hackers who want nothing more than to disrupt your video call.

Since many CPB team members are now working remotely, our Information Security Department provided video conferencing safety tips, which we want to share with you too.

  1. Password protect your meetings: Ensure passwords are enabled for all meetings.

  2. Verify attendees: Validate attendees at the start of the meeting and review participants list during the call.

  3. Use video to show who you are: Use virtual background to add fun and hide your environment.

  4. Be wary of links shared for video conferencing: Validate video conferencing links to protect against malicious scams.

  5. Report suspicious activity: Report suspicious activity to your security and IT teams. If using external video conferencing contact the vendor for suspicious activity.
