Maui Disaster Relief

On August 8th, 2023, wildfires broke out on the island of Maui, in the West Maui Region. By the time the fires were brought under control, 17,000 acres had burned, destroying 2,200 residential and commercial buildings, including many historic landmarks in Lahaina. Tragically, 102 lives were lost.

One year later, while we continue to recover emotionally and economically, we see hope.

Rebuilding will take time and the emotional scars will need time to heal, but where there was total devastation, we see a community starting to re-emerge. There is still much to do, and things may never be exactly as they were, but seeing how far we’ve come in the first year clearly gives us hope.

Consider the historic banyan tree in Lahaina. Initially, it was not given much chance of survival. Yet, with constant care and nurturing over the past year, today the tree rises anew. Let this tree, planted as a sapling in 1873, serve as a beacon of hope for all of us as Maui continues on its path to recovery.
