Are you dreaming of exploring the vibrant streets of Tokyo or wandering through the serene temples of Kyoto? Japan is a destination that captivates travelers with its rich culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning landscapes.

Whether you're planning your first trip, returning for another adventure, or looking to conduct an international business venture, Central Pacific Bank can help make your journey seamless and stress-free. As one of the best regional banks in Hawaii, we specialize in simplifying currency exchange and providing expert advice on doing business in Japan.

"Traveling to new places and doing business abroad can seem daunting, but with CPB by your side, you can feel confident and prepared for whatever comes your way,” says Central Pacific Bank’s Assistant Vice President and International Banking Officer Tatsuki Anthony Hirai.

Preparing for Your Trip to Japan

Before you set off on your adventure to Japan, it's essential to make thorough preparations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Here are three helpful tips and financial insights to help you get ready:

Pack Smart

Pack strategically to maximize comfort and convenience.

Opt for essential items that will enhance your travel experience, such as:

  • Versatile clothing
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Portable chargers
  • A compact umbrella for unpredictable weather

Embrace Cultural Awareness

Japan is a country rich in cultural traditions and customs, and understanding and respecting these practices is key to enjoying a fulfilling travel experience. Take the time to familiarize yourself with Japanese etiquette, such as bowing when greeting others and observing proper table manners.

Like in Hawaii, efforts to embrace local culture will be appreciated by locals and enhance your interactions throughout your trip.

Currency Exchange Preparation

One of the best ways to prepare for your trip is by exchanging foreign currency before leaving. This eliminates any last-minute stress or confusion at the airport or upon arrival at your chosen destination.

With CPB's foreign currency exchange services, customers can easily purchase a variety of major foreign currency banknotes, including the Japanese yen. Additionally, our competitive exchange rates ensure that customers get more value for their money compared to other financial institutions.

Bonus Tips for Existing CPB Customers

Buying Foreign Currency Takes Several Business Days

  • Plan ahead when buying yen or exchanging foreign currency. Customers must visit a branch and "reserve" yen in advance, with the rate being determined on the day of reservation. Please note that this process usually takes several business days and may not be available at all CPB branches. Please check with your local branch for more information.

Enter a Travel Notice to Easily Use Your CPB Debit Card in Japan

  • If you plan on using your CPB debit card in Japan, whether it's for shopping or for taking cash out at ATMs, remember to put a travel notice in via the CPB app or online banking to ensure seamless transactions.
